Why Retaining Walls Fail (And How to Build One That Won't)
A retaining wall holds back tons of wet soil. When one fails, it's almost never a mystery — it's one of these.

Drive around Knox County and you’ll spot them: retaining walls leaning forward, bulging in the middle, or already blown out. A retaining wall does serious structural work — it holds back tons of soil and water on our hilly, clay-heavy lots. When one fails, it’s rarely bad luck. It’s almost always one of these.
1. No drainage behind the wall
This is the number-one cause. Soil behind a wall soaks up rain and holds it (especially our clay). That water adds enormous hydrostatic pressure against the back of the wall. Without a way to relieve it — gravel backfill and a perforated drain pipe — that pressure pushes the wall forward until it leans or collapses.
The fix: clean, free-draining gravel behind the wall and a drain line that carries water away.
2. Backfilled with the wrong material
Many failed walls were backfilled with the same heavy clay they’re holding back. Clay holds water and swells. A proper wall is backfilled with free-draining stone, not the excavated dirt.
3. A weak or missing base
A retaining wall is only as good as the footing under it. A compacted, level base of the right depth spreads the load. Set the first course on soft or uneven ground and the whole wall follows it down.
4. No soil reinforcement on taller walls
Taller walls (generally over about 3–4 feet) need geogrid — layers of reinforcement that extend back into the soil and tie the whole mass together. Build a tall wall without it and gravity slowly wins.
5. No batter (set-back)
Good segmental walls lean back slightly into the hill (called batter) so gravity works with them. A dead-vertical wall has nothing helping it resist the soil pressure.
6. Skipping the permit and engineering
In Knox County and surrounding areas, walls over a certain height (commonly 4 feet from the bottom of the footing) typically require an engineered design and a permit. That’s not red tape — it’s the math that keeps a big wall standing. Skipping it is a gamble with tons of soil.

- A drain line to relieve water pressure
- Geogrid soil reinforcement on taller walls
- Proper batter and compaction lift by lift
