Concrete vs. Paver Driveway: Which Is Right for Your Home?

Replacing a driveway is a big decision, and the first fork in the road is concrete or pavers. Since we install both, here’s the straight comparison for East Tennessee.

Cost

• Concrete driveway: ~$10–$12 per square foot (broom finish)
• Paver driveway: ~$45–$55 per square foot

Concrete is clearly the lower up-front cost. Pavers cost more because each unit is set by hand on a deep, engineered base.

Lifespan

• Concrete: 30+ years when built on a proper base with drainage.
• Pavers: 50+ years — they flex with our clay soil instead of cracking on it.

Cracking & repairs

This is the big one in East Tennessee, where clay soil moves with freeze-thaw cycles.

• Concrete is a rigid slab. Built right it lasts, but ground movement can eventually crack it, and a crack or stain is hard to fix invisibly.
• Pavers flex with the ground and are repairable one unit at a time — lift the damaged paver, reset it, done. No patchwork.

Curb appeal

Concrete offers broom, stamped and decorative finishes. Pavers offer a much wider range of colors, patterns and borders, and many buyers see them as the premium, higher-resale option.

Maintenance

• Concrete: occasional cleaning; reseal decorative finishes every couple of years.
• Pavers: occasional joint re-sanding; the trade-off for their flexibility and repairability.

Bottom line

• Choose concrete if up-front budget is the priority and you want a proven, lower-cost driveway.
• Choose pavers if you want maximum lifespan, easy repairs and the highest curb appeal — and you plan to stay a while.
